What active noise cancelling actually does, and what it doesn't

ANC blocks the low rumble of engines and offices very well. Sharp sounds, less so.

What active noise cancelling actually does, and what it doesn't

General educational reading. Not professional advice. For hearing symptoms, safety decisions, or medical concerns, talk to a qualified professional.

How ANC works

Tiny microphones in the headphone listen to ambient sound and play back an inverted version through the driver, cancelling steady tones before they reach your ear.

Where it shines

Aircraft cabins, train carriages, busy cafes, and office air conditioning. The constant low-frequency drone of these environments is where ANC removes the most fatigue.

Where it struggles

Sudden, high-frequency sounds like keyboard clatter, dogs barking, and baby crying are harder to cancel cleanly. Passive isolation from the ear tip seal does more for those.

Transparency modes

Most ANC headphones now offer a transparency mode that pipes outside sound back in. Useful for short conversations at a counter without removing the earbuds.
